How To Read A Book - Syntopical Reading

Syntopical reading is the most advanced kind of reading.   It involves analyzing the discussion of a single topic throughout many books by different authors which can be quite a chore.

There are five steps to syntopical reading:

  1. Finding the relevant passages in all major works about the topic.
  2. Bringing the authors to terms using the steps outlined in previous types of reading.
  3. Getting the questions clear.
  4. Defining the issues.
  5. Analyzing the discussion.
I was recommended this book by Mortimer Adler before I started university.  It was one of the most useful books I have ever read.  If you want to learn how to read at an advanced, academic level I would heartily endorse this book.  Buy it today to learn how to improve your reading and analytical skills.
